About Alpacas Alpacas come from South America - Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. They were cherished by ancient civilizations and played a significant role in the Incan culture.
The two most common types of alpaca are the Huacaya and the Suri. Huacayas are fluffy and Suris have long “dreadlocks.” There is also the Vicuna and the very rare (found only in South America) Guanaco. All are from the camelid family and cousins to the Llama. The lifespan of an alpaca is about 20 years and their gestation period is 11.5 months. They average about 36 inches tall at the withers and weigh around 150 pounds. They eat hay and being ruminants, chew a cud.
Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest and most luxurious natural fibers. It is shorn from the animal once a year. Soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter and stronger than wool, it comes in 22 natural colors. Once reserved for royalty, alpaca can now be enjoyed by everyone.
Alpacas are easy to raise. They are intelligent, clean, safe and quiet. Their soft padded feet are gentle on the land. They can be easily transported, make practical pets, and great 4-H projects.
